Used? (2018) Oil paint tubes, some with paint. Size approximately 13 x 6 x 10 cm.
These are discarded paint tubes. They were given to me as unusable, unwanted and a gift.
Their form is dictated by a simple rule. They are piled together and pushed as their remaining capacity allows.
There are no gaps in it's form. They form a unified whole.
This piece is aesthetically pleasing. Responses to it have been favourable. Is this because it is something unwanted made beautiful? Aesthetic value prioritised over conceptual value? Conceptually it is simple, aesthetically it is pleasing. The question ‘why?’ still remains.
It is too aesthetic for me to value it as a success. Ironically, given its popularity, it is a work I would overlook, in favour of more conceptually successful pieces, if it came to decisions for exhibition.
